What is Color Profiling?

ICC profiles help you to get proper color reproduction when you input images from a scanner or camera and display them on a monitor or output them on a proofing device or printer. Generally speaking a profile captures the color gamut of a specific device and defines it into a device independent numerical value. Software applications that support ICC profiles can then be set up to accurately reproduce color images when output to known targets such as SWOP, Gracol or a specific printing condition. The goal is to reproduce predictable accurate color weather it is a monitor, proofing device or printing press.

Canned Proofing Profiles vs. Custom Profiles

Canned profiles or LUT’s (look up tables) often do a good job with proofing devices but can be a hit or miss when it comes to reproducing an accurate match to a known target. Inks, papers, device calibration and the tolerances in manufacturing of the devices themselves all play a huge part in the process.

A custom color profile will give you the best most accurate color output because the profile is built for a specific ink or pigment, paper and device combination leaving little to chance.
